چکیده

Using data on individual consumption expenditures from a sample of farm households in the Philippines, we construct a direct test of the unitary household model. We are able to contrast the efficient outcomes predicted by the unitary household model with the constrained efficient outcomes we might expect if there was a hidden action problem within the household; in the latter case, household members are allocated a sort of efficiency wage (à la Shapiro and Stiglitz, 1984), which depends on their (stochastic) productivity. Finally, we are able to contrast each of these environments with one in which food consumption delivers not only utils, but also nutrients which affect future productivity (a different sort of “efficiency wage”, à la Stiglitz, 1976). Moment restrictions implied by each of these three different sets of arrangements are nested, and so we are able to distinguish among these three different hypotheses regarding intra-household allocation.

Incentives and Nutrition for Rotten Kids: the Quantity and Quality of Intrahousehold Food Allocation in the Philippines

We construct a model of food demand which distinguishes between the nutrients supplied by a particular food bundle and the qual ity of that bundle, as measured by its cost. We show that when nutrition affects only utility then under rather general conditions it will be optimal for all members of the household to consume food bundles of identical quality. This is true even when household member...

Rotten Spouses, Family Transfers and Public Goods

Rotten Spouses, Family Transfers and Public Goods We show that once interfamily exchanges are considered, Becker’s rotten kids mechanism has some remarkable implications that have gone hitherto unnoticed. Specifically, we establish that Cornes and Silva’s (1999) result of efficiency in the contribution game amongst siblings extends to a setting where the contributors (spouses) belong to differe...

Married with Children: A Collective Labor Supply Model with Detailed Time Use and Intrahousehold Expenditure Information

Married with Children: A Collective Labor Supply Model with Detailed Time Use and Intrahousehold Expenditure Information We propose a collective labor supply model with household production that generalizes an original model of Blundell, Chiappori and Meghir (2005). In our model, adults’ individual preferences do not only depend on own leisure and individual private consumption of market goods....

Rotten Kids with Bad Intentions

Rotten Kids with Bad Intentions We examine a "Rotten Kid" model (Becker 1974) where a player with social preferences interacts with an egoistic player. We assume that social preferences are intention-based rather than outcome-based. In a very general multi-stage setting we show that any equilibrium must involve mutually unkind behavior of both players, endogenously generating negative emotions ...

Transfers within a Three Generations Family: When the Rotten Kids Turn into Altruistic Parents

Transfers within a Three Generations Family: When the Rotten Kids Turn into Altruistic Parents We study exchanges between three overlapping generations with non-dynastic altruism. The middleaged choose informal care provided to their parents and education expenditures for their children. The young enjoy their education, while the old may leave a bequest to their children. Within each period the...
